Aaron,

"And give me a Minister
From my family,
"Aaron, my brother;
"Add to my strength
Through him.
"And make him share
My task:
"That we may celebrate
Thy praise without stint,
"And remember Thee
Without stint:
"For Thou art ever seeing
(God) said: "Granted
Is thy prayer, O Moses!"

Literally, "Strengthen my back with him". A man
strength lies in his back and backbone so that he can
stand erect and boldly face his tasks.

The requests that Moses makes are inspired, not by
earthly but by spiritual motives. The motive, expressed in
the most general terms, is to glorify God, not in an occasional
way, but systematically and continuously, "without stint".

The celebration of God's praise and remembrance is one form of
showing gratitude on the part of Moses for the Grace which God
has bestowed upon him.

THE PROBLEM

I like a church; I like a cowl;
I love a prophet of the soul;
And on my heart monastic aisles
Fall like sweet strains or pensive smiles:
Yet not for all his faith can see,
Would I that cowled churchman be.
Why should the vest on him allure,
Which I could not on me endure?

Not from a vain or shallow thought
His awful Jove young Phidias brought;
Never from the lips of cunning fell
The thrilling Delphic oracle;
Out of the heart of Nature rolled
The burdens of the Bible old;
The litanies of nations came,
Like the volcano's tongue of flame,
Up from the burning core below,-
The canticles of love and woe:
The hand that rounded Peter's dome,
And groined the aisles of Christian Rome,
Wrought in a sad sincerity;
Himself from God he could not free;

The test of true Faith is not mere lip profession, but bringing all our doubts and disputes to the one in whom we profess faith. Further, when a decision is given we are not only to accept it. but find in our inmost souls no difficulty and no resistance, but on the contrary a joyful acceptance springing from the conviction of our own faith.

The highest in faith willingly sacrifice their lives, their homes. and all that they hold dearest, in the cause of GOD. Those whose faith is not so strong are expected at least to do what a loyal member of any society does, submit his doubts and disputes to the head of the society and cheerfully accept his decision and submit to it. The contrast is between the Hypocrites who will not even do this, and the really devoted men and women who would voluntarily sacrifice their lives.

Four advantages of obedience to GOD are mentioned, in the order in which they will appeal to the beginner in faith: (1) his own benefit ("best for them"): (2) strengthening of his faith, as he becomes more and more at home in the world of faith: (3) reward from GOD's own Presence, such intense conviction that no further arguments are needed: (4) the Straight Way, in which there is no doubt or difficulty whatever in our practical conduct.

GOD OF THE NATIONS

God of the nations, who from dawn of days,
Hast led thy people in their widening ways,
Through whose deep purpose stranger thousands stand
Here in the borders of our promised land.

Thine ancient might rebuked the Pharaoh's boast,
Thou wast the shield for Israel's marching host,
And, all the ages through, past crumbling throne
And broken fetter, thou hast brought thine own.

Thy hand has led across the hungry sea
The eager people flocking to be free,
And, from the breeds of earth, thy silent sway
Fashions the nation of the broadening day.

Then, for thy grace to grow in brotherhood,
For hearts aflame to serve thy destined good,
For faith, and will to win what faith shall see,
God of thy people, hear us cry to thee.
